Chiropractic Care and Disturbed Sleep Patterns in Infants

In the July 2006 issue of “The Journal of Clinical Chiropractiv Pediatrics”, a case study was published that documented the effects of chiropractic care on a 9 month old infant girl with a history of disturbed sleep. “The Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics” is a peer-reviewed scientific publication, and the official publication of The Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics of the International Chiropractor’s Association.

First, the study states that an average 9 month old should sleep about 14 hours per day. In this particular case the infant girl was presented for chiropractic care with a history of disturbed sleep and fussiness, and what was called generally unsettled behavior. Also, the child could not turn her head to the left. These problems had been going on since childbirth.

Chiropractic examination revealed a significant reduced range of neck motion to the left and muscle tension in the left side of the neck. Palpation of the child’s neck exhibited signs of pain by crying and moving away.

It was determined through the examination that multiple subluxations were present and an appropriate course of adjustments were started. The results were very impressive.

This study showed that on the first day of the infant’s first adjustment, the baby slept for 5 hours, and was followed by 2 night time sleep periods of 6 hours each. Over the next three weeks the night time sleep remained between 6 and 8 hours and the daytime sleep was reduced.

This child showed significant increased range of neck motion in additional to the dramatic increases in sleep improvement. She was also able to turn her head to the left in response to stimuli on the left side.

In conclusion, the authors noted that there were dramatic improvements after just one chiropractic adjustment, indicating that the subluxations in the neck were at least in part responsible for this infant’s disturbed sleep pattern.
