OKLAHOMA CITY — Sleep Apnea affects a number of adults and can even be deadly. It also affects children, although many go undiagnosed. Dr. Jonathan Schwartz of the Integris Sleep Disorders Center says children may need to wear a “c-pap” device in order to sleep correctly. Schwartz says that with the rise in childhood obesity, he is seeing more childhood sleep apnea.

Undiagnosed, Shwartz says apnea can be dangerous for children’s hearts like it is for adults.

“Even in kids, there was a study done looking at kids that snore and have sleep apnea and it showed changes in the heart by echocardiogram.”

Schwartz says symptoms of childhood apnea include hyperactivity, irritability, lack of concentration, irregular breathing during sleep and dark circles under eyes.
