Sleeping Pills Don?t Cure Insomnia Because They Don?t Treat the Causes of it and They Have After Effects

Sleeping Pills Don’t Cure Insomnia Because They Don’t Treat the Causes of it.

Sleeping Pills are fast and easy and available to most people but they do not cure insomnia because they do not cure the causes of it.

It takes an average of 46mins for sleeping   pills to take effect

You become physically dependent on them They loose their effectiveness because after 4 to 6 weeks the brain becomes accustomed to the drug and does not work anymore You have less deep sleep (which is what you really need most of) and more stage 2 sleep Hangover effect the day after

Do you dread bedtime?  Does it take you forever to fall asleep, Do you have trouble staying asleep, Do you feel like exhausted all day long because you did not have a good night sleep?  To help you get a better deeper sleep without the use of pills (because they do not work) these are a few things you will need to do:

Train your brain and your body; develop a good evening routine, a cosy and harmonic bedroom conducive to sleep.  You can learn more about this tried and tested effective programme at :http://www.sleeptracks.com/go.php?offer=persevere1&pid=arb

There are so many things you can do to help you make positive changes to your sleep pattern and sleep better.

Change your beliefs about sleep – “I can’t get to sleep” becomes a fulfilling prophecy. Change your sleep habits Train your brain to fall asleep with the Sleep Optimisation Tracks Have an evening routine that makes a transition from daytime to night time.   You need to let your brain activity subside during night time by making it a habit to unwind with things like meditation, relaxation etc. Take it easy and avoid strenuous activity less than 3 hours prior to bedtime Avoid confrontation or task that taxes your brain, fill it with chitter chatter or causes you anxiety. Bore yourself to sleep by doing mundane tasks like paper work or reading a text book Take a warm dissolving and relaxing bath.   Your body temperature will rise at first but it will ease drastically helping to send you to sleep. Make your bedroom cosy and harmonic (the cosier the better) and make it a room just for sleeping and making love. Avoid things that tell your brain to engage in activities Make sure you have silence.  External noises can disrupt your sleep. Make your room as dark as possible in the evening (use dimmer switches if possible).   Eye mask is also an excellent idea for blocking out light if there is no way you can make your room dark. Cool sleeping room – your room temperature should be 65-70% F Use “Fall Asleep Track”(this can be found at the above site I have given you. Wake up at about the same time every day (your sleep clock needs a fine tune cue)

So, how much sleep do you need every night?    There is no particular number of hours and all sleep time is not the equal.   What you need is deep sleep and you should be aiming for quality rather than quantity.

By worrying about not getting enough sleep and trying hard to fall asleep actually prevents you from falling asleep.   Falling asleep is not an action; it happens automatically if your brain and body clock is fine tuned to do this.

Now what is your sleep problem?   Do you have trouble falling asleep?   Do you wake up too early in the morning?  Do you have trouble staying asleep?  Do you have poor quality sleep?

If you need more than 30 minutes to fall asleep at night and to wake up in the morning then this may be your biological clock is delayed meaning your body temperature falls later at night and increases later in the morning.

There are a few things you can do to reset your inner clock and improve your sleep and energy levels:

By being exposed to bright daylight in the early mornings helps adjust your body clock Activities like taking a brisk walk before 10am for about 10 minutes will do the trick Do not go to bed if you do not feel sleepy Do not stay in bed if you do not fall asleep.  Get up and do something else that would induce sleep or what I find the fastest way to send me to sleep is listening to my Insomnia Buster track till I feel drowsy which normally happens pretty quickly.  Do not lie in the next morning If you are anxious and can’t get to sleep or relaxed but can’t sleep maybe you ought to try some of the excellent aids on the website address I have given above.

If you are waking up too early you may be suffering from unfinished or depressed sleep, and your body clock may be moving slower.  This means your body temperature rises earlier than normal in the morning.  To reset these are a few things you can do:

Exercise later during the day, but not 3 hours or less before bedtime Expose your body to light during the latter part of the day or use a light box in the afternoon. Go to bed later For deeper sleep use Insomnia Buster or Whole Night Tracks on a loop.  Email me at sleepandstressnurse@googlemail.com for your Free Full Report on Sleep and how you can regain a healthy sleep pattern.

Are you having trouble staying asleep waking up feeling more tired than when you went to bed then your sleep cycles are not completed?   You may be suffering from fragmented or poor quality sleep, sometimes called sleep maintenance insomnia.  This tends to happen mostly to people with sedentary lifestyle and older people who do not do many activities.   By increasing the level of activities you do during the day and exposing your body to more light during the day will help solve this problem.

If you like this article pass it on to your friends.

Bye for now folks and enjoy making positive changes to your sleep pattern.

Types And Process Of A Drug And Alcohol Rehab Facility

There are four different types of rehabilitation centres available to those looking for drug and alcohol rehab facilities: Primary care, extended primary care, secondary care and tertiary care. These different drug and alcohol treatment centres accommodate all the different stages in the treatment process and a patient will usually complete at least two of these by recommendation of their therapist or recovery counsellor.

Primary care facilities

Primary care facilities usually have a programme lasting three to four weeks and are an intensive treatment type which requires a doctor or psychiatrist to examine the patient and refer them to the centre. Clients will stay in the centre as in-patients for the duration of their stay but are allowed visitors at allocated times and only after their first week in the centre. The first week is generally a time for detoxification if needed or if it has not been completed in a hospital already, and also a time to settle in and become introduced to the recovery programme of the centre.

The programme at a primary care rehab will consist of intensive therapy groups, individual counselling and written work throughout the day and attending recovery meetings such as Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. In primary care, addicts begin the process of living each day without drugs, yet without much stress of exposure to the outside world as this may cause heavy emotional reactions resulting in the relapse of the patient. Primary care treatment centres are extremely costly and whilst some medical aids do pay for the treatment fees, many do not.

Extended primary care facilities

Extended primary care is a type of facility that runs an inpatient programme similar to a regular primary care facility, but the client stay for a longer period; usually three months but in some cases and when the client is still not ready to progress to the next stage of their recovery they can stay longer. Extended primary care facilities will run a recovery programme exactly like the normal primary care facilities with all day groups and one-on-one counselling.

The difference between the two types of centre is that extended involves a longer stay, the patients will perform therapeutic duties such as cooking dinner at week-ends, making their beds and gardening as well as their therapy. With extended primary care treatment, patients are able to access the same level of therapy as in a regular primary care centre, but for much longer, allowing clients a better chance at recovery.

Secondary care facilities

Drug and alcohol rehab patients will often leave a primary or extended primary care facility to move to a secondary care facility for further assistance with their substance abuse problems. Every treatment centre differs from another but a secondary care centre will generally have a less intensive programme than primary care centres and allow much more freedom than primary or extended primary.

There is usually an all day programme but with only one or two therapy groups per day. Clients participate in career counselling, therapeutic duties, written work and house meetings as well as the therapy, whilst some that have jobs or are studying are allowed to go out during the day to work or college/university.

Patients at a secondary care facility are free to go out during the evenings, whether it is to recovery meetings or to have good, clean fun. There is a curfew and every client must fill in a daily plan detailing their plans for the next day which must be followed. In secondary drug and alcohol rehab facilities, clients are reintroduced back into society gradually and without too much pressure, but still having a programme to follow at their treatment centre.

Tertiary care facilities

Tertiary care is a drug treatment facility that allows a little more freedom whilst still helping the addict to immerse themselves further back into society and additionally providing a safe place to return to at night. Tertiary care facilities usually do not run a day time programme except for maybe an occasional art therapy group or step work group and will have group therapy a couple of times per week in the evening.

Clients are free to spend their day as they wish as long as they abide by the rules of the centre such as no using substances, no association with anyone using substances, no visiting bars or night clubs etc; they also do not need to provide a daily plan with their intended whereabouts. Job seeking or finding some meaningful way to spend time working on themselves is compulsory, this could entail voluntary work for instance. The curfew of the centre is generally later and patients can often request to sleep at home on weekends as long as their home is a safe place.

Research has shown that addicts who receive long term, in-patient treatment in a drug and alcohol treatment centre are more likely to remain abstinent than those who participate in shorter programmes.

Drug and alcohol rehab centres are a very successful way for struggling addicts to seek help for their addiction and most centres will refer clients to further centres to help them start a successful life of recovery. Clients benefit from healthy living, intensive therapy and a daily programme of recovery in a drug and alcohol rehab, giving them the chance to begin a new life and maintain it once they have finished with their addiction treatment.

Oasis Counselling Centre is an extended primary care drug and alcohol treatment centre facility that also specialise in treatment of other addictions at their Plettenberg bay rehab.

Would You Like an Alternative to Harsh Drugs for Combating Anxiety Attacks

I am one of the millions of sufferers of anxiety or panic attacks, so I know first hand how bad it can get. It first happened to me just sitting in a chair with some friends talking. There was no stress and nothing on my mind to cause anything, but it happened.

I felt this warm flush come over my whole body and my heart begin to go faster and faster. I felt like I was going to explode and finally I couldn’t stay quiet about it any longer. I grabbed my chest, even though there was no pain, just the warm feeling.

It caused quite a stir, everyone was concerned and my wife called 911. You know the drill, by the time they got there it was all over, but I didn’t know what the heck was going on. They recommended going to get checked out.

So the next day I went to the doctor and explained what had happened. Unfortunately they put me on some bad drugs right away. I had no idea what was wrong or what I was taking.

This still makes me angry that we are at the mercy of doctors sometimes and they push some drug on us that the drug company pill pushers have given them samples of to through around.

Anyway, they put me on a 24 hour heart monitor and sure enough I had another bad attack, but you know what, the monitor didn’t so much as show a blip of trouble.

They said, oh its just anxiety. They proceeded to ask me if there was anything going on in my life causing stress. There were a couple things, but I didn’t think I was that worried about anything.

It was later I begin to find out about physical conditions that caused these attacks. It was a long battle getting educated and I had to endure harsh side effects from the drugs and when I decided to get off them I had even worse withdrawal effects.

This was a real challenge. I finally knew what it is like for a drug addict to deal with. But I was determined I was going to get off the drug no matter what.

It literally took 6 months to get past the worst of the symptoms that occurred everyday. I went through a setback that caused me to have to go on another drug and again went through the same steps to get off the drug with the same 6 months of agony.

The good news came to me accidentally as I was searching for help on the Internet. I found information that pointed to a possible
connection to my problem.

The following things I found out was adding to my problem and I had to change: caffeine was adding to the problem; I could not drink a cup of coffee without my heart racing: I had a period of time that I went on the Adkins diet and the lack of carbo-hydrates, added to the deletion and absorption of serotonin;

I had to get my blood pressure under control as it would spike to 200 over 135 in several bad attacks.
I changed my lifestyle and diet as much as possible, but this didn’t solve the problem. I looked for a way to re-supply the serotonin and control the mood swings and attacks of panic that seemed to come randomly. Sometimes even in my sleep.

That never made sense to me, until I learned that panic was brought on chemically and not necessarily from events. Real help came to me, when I discovered the following formula to help control the symptoms and over time re-supply a lot of the serotonin.

I did have to go on blood pressure medicine to get that under control, because even when I was not in panic mode, it was still to high.

The following is what I found to really help give me back my life. I take a Homeopathic medicinal VAXA called Deprex. I am giving this my personal endorsement, but I am sure that each individual may have different results. I have no financial interest in the company other than I want them to be around, because the formula really works for me.

If you are looking for help with anxiety attacks, you can get a lot of free information at their website and read about what all goes into the formula and decide for yourself.

The drugs that are popular for controlling anxiety, panic attacks and depression, make the brain reuse the limited supply of serotonin, but this is not all it does.

There are harsh side effects as I mentioned before. The only side effect of the formula I now take is that it has the effect of loosening the bowels, which sometimes can lead to diarrhea.

But that is nothing compared to the symptoms of the harsh drugs I was taking before.

How to Cure Your Drug Addiction Without Entering a Drug Rehab Program

A drug addiction is strongly desiring to take a drug that makes you feel good. For example, snorting cocaine makes you energetic, alert, euphoric, with increased mental clarity. Once you’re addicted to a drug, abstaining from it becomes a nightmare. For example, abstaining from cocaine can cause agitation, depression, extreme fatigue, anxiety, angry outbursts, lack of motivation, vomiting, shaking, irritability, muscle pain, and disturbed sleep.

Thorndike’s Law of Effect

Simply put, what keeps you addicted is that taking the drug makes you feel good, and avoiding it makes you feel awful. This coincides with Thorndike’s Law of Effect: If a reward follows a particular behavior, that behavior probably will be repeated; if a punishment follows a particular behavior, that behavior probably won’t be repeated.

For example, feeling good is your reward for snorting cocaine; feeling awful is your punishment for avoiding cocaine. So what are you going to do? This is why it’s so difficult to abstain from an addiction.

You have a drug addiction and can’t quit. Now what? Don’t despair; there’s a way out. The trick is seeing your addiction differently – seeing it for what it really is.

Unemployable, Lonely, and Sick

Though taking your drug makes you feel good immediately, it makes you feel awful in the long run. For example, snorting cocaine will eventually cause health problems such as heart disease, heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, seizures, gastrointestinal problems, convulsions, nausea, blurred vision, chest pain, fever, muscle spasms, and coma. If you think that these health problems are bad, long-term cocaine snorting causes social problems such as lying, stealing, absenteeism at work, and sometimes even prostitution.

So basically, long-term cocaine use causes you unemployment due to your work absenteeism, loss of friends and family due to your lying and stealing, and sickness due to cocaine’s damaging effects on your body. Cocaine ultimately transforms you into a loser – unemployable, lonely, and sick!

Other popular recreational drugs such as crack, heroin, crystal meth, Vicodin, ecstasy, and OxyContin also ultimately transform you into a loser – unemployable, lonely, and sick!

Thorndike’s Law of Effect Revisited

Now let’s revisit Thorndike’s Law of Effect: If a reward follows a particular behavior, that behavior probably will be repeated; if a punishment follows a particular behavior, that behavior probably won’t be repeated.

Being unemployable, lonely, and sick is your punishment for taking your desired drug over time; being employed, loved, and healthy is your reward for avoiding your desired drug over time. So what are you going to do?

Classical Conditioning

Wait a minute! Reading this article won’t help you! Once done reading, you’ll go back to snorting cocaine, smoking crack, shooting heroin, popping OxyContin, or whatever it is you do.

That’s why I’m introducing a powerfully effective self-help intervention that you must do regularly. This self-help intervention is called Classical Conditioning. Simply put, Classical Conditioning consists of pairing a particular feeling with a particular event over and over again until they become automatically associated with each other.

Let’s say that you have a cocaine addiction and want to quit. So instead of feeling good after snorting cocaine, you want to feel awful. What makes you feel awful? Electric shock? Okay, we’ll use this.

So each time you snort cocaine, you give yourself a severe electric shock. You feel awful each time. Eventually, you’ll automatically associate snorting cocaine with feeling awful – without the electric shock! Thus, curing yourself of cocaine addiction.

Nevertheless, electrically shocking yourself isn’t socially acceptable and will attract unwanted attention. We need something more discreet. What’s more discreet than the hidden thoughts inside your head? Can you use your thoughts to make yourself feel awful? Let’s see.

You just snorted cocaine and want to make yourself feel awful for doing it. So you think, “By using cocaine, I’m making myself into a complete loser. I’m now becoming totally unemployable, lonely, and sick. Worthless. Useless. A hopeless piece of crap. Good for nothing.” How do you feel? Awful, right?

So if you think along these lines each time you snort cocaine, you’ll eventually learn to associate snorting cocaine with feeling awful – without using your thoughts to make yourself feel awful! Thus, curing yourself of cocaine addiction.

Points to Ponder

This article is tailored to those addicted to hard drugs such as cocaine, crack, heroin, crystal meth, Vicodin, ecstasy, and OxyContin. Nevertheless, the intervention discussed here can be used, with some minor adjustments, to overcome addictions to the softer drugs.

For example, smoking cigarettes doesn’t necessarily cause unemployment or loneliness. But it does cause health problems such as emphysema, heart disease, stroke, cancer, birth defects, green teeth, and spider veins. So rather than thinking of yourself as becoming unemployable, lonely, and sick each time you smoke a cigarette, you just simply think of yourself as becoming sick.

Conclusion

In the past, drug addiction was seen as an overpowering and unmanageable disease. And the addict, using his own willpower, was seen as powerless against this disease. Therefore the addict was encouraged to join a support group that might lead him to a spiritual awakening.

Currently, drug addiction is seen as self-destructive behavior maintained by the reward of taking a drug (feeling good) and the punishment of abstaining from it (withdrawal symptoms). Given this, a scientific intervention such as Classical Conditioning can effectively cure it.

Though I’m scientifically inclined, I do believe in the power of prayer; since I’ve seen it work in my own life. So by all means, pray to be free from your addiction; then go forth and free yourself with Classical Conditioning.

Controller Supplements Vs Sleeping Pills

Another drawback is that sleep medication will stay in your blood stream, so you may not feel very “refreshed” the following morning. It can give you a hangover effect.

These drugs also carry a potential for abuse, which on increasing the dose can lead to unconsciousness, surgical anesthesia and at excessive doses, coma and ultimately death.

So before deciding that sleeping pills are the answer to your sleepless nights, think again.  Clearly, the disadvantages outweigh the benefits.  Firstly, after a couple of weeks your body will get used to the sleeping pills and will develop a tolerance to them, therefore they will not have the same effect on you.  They can also become addictive; regardless of the risk of one increasing the dosage due to addictiveness or the tolerance that is created against the sleeping pills.  Also, the short term effects of sleeping pills, which one will go through everyday, are quite unpleasant: hangover effect the next morning, dry eyes, mouth and nose.

There are other alternatives one can try – natural herb remedies.  Herbal remedies are non-addictive.  There is also no risk of tolerance involved.

Alta Care Laboratoires – Paris have launched the Controller Range on the market, a range designed specifically to aid at promoting a refreshing night’s sleep, helping you wake up refreshed and ready for your daily challenges.  Continuous use of the Controller Range does not result in addictiveness or tolerance.  In fact, as opposed to sleeping pills,   continuous use of the Controller Range helps the body to naturally regulate sleep patterns.

The Controller Range is also an ideal remedy for not just insomniacs, but also for light sleepers, for those people who do not manage to have one long sleep, but wake up regularly during the night or also take a long time to actually get to sleep.

The Controller Range is also beneficial for those who suffer from anxiety, have different work routines that disrupt their sleep pattern or drink a lot of caffeine products. An important factor to appreciate in the Controller range is that one achieves higher and longer lasting energy levels during the day. Controller reduces anxiety and stress, whilst enhancing concentration and focus. The Controller products regenerate physical and mental capacity and help at maintaining a strong, healthy immune system. Furthermore, they boost mental oxygen intake and delivery, plus support the natural nocturnal release of hormones and endorphins.

Controller Natural Sleep Syrup contains extracts of Hypericum, which is used to treat insomnia and fights tiredness and exhaustion and enhances mental capacities.  Also found in Controller Syrup is the extract Tilia Cordata, which aids and promotes better quality sleep.  Another two extracts: Melissa Officinalis and Valeriana Officinalis are used as mild sedatives, and when used together are effective in improving quality of sleep.  Controller Natural Sleep Syrup also contains Chamomile, which is widely used for its relaxing and sedating properties.

Alta Care Laboratoires – Paris, do not dilute their syrups with water, thus the active ingredients are stronger and therefore give better effective results.  The rich ingredients of Controller Natural Sleep Syrup are diluted in sugar-free honey and Pineapple juice, guaranteeing an excellent taste!

Controller Syrup is to be taken at one teaspoon at night, before going to bed, for a minimum of one month.
The Controller Natural Sleep Ampoules are made up of high quality ‘fresh’ natural ingredients.  In ampoules, unlike in the case of tablets and capsules, the extracts do not go through manufacturing processes (like drying, compressing, etc), in which the extracts lose a lot of there activity.

Controller Natural Sleep Ampoules contain extracts of HTML, which promote better quality sleep, and facilitate one’s falling to sleep.
Controller Ampoules are to be administered at night, before going to bed, one ampoule every night.

The Controller Soup contains Marjoram, a phyto-extract known for its sedating and relaxing properties.  Infusions of Chamomile have been also used because they help in the treatment of restlessness and in mild cases of insomnia due to nervous disorders. Passiflora and Basil were incorporated to promote sleep.

Apart from being very economical, Controller Soup contains no artificial additives, agents or taste enhancers, but only vegetables that are all organic with a very high content of minerals and active substances. Moreover, no preservatives are needed as it is conserved in a 300g decompressed tin.  Controller Soup is gluten free and high in fibre as the vegetables are in a fibre base. It is extremely fast and easy to prepare as it only takes blending five teaspoons of this unique instant mix in a bowl, with 40cl of boiling water.

The Controller Range, by Alta Care Laboratoires – Paris gives marvellous results, helping one to have a refreshing night’s sleep and a recharged feeling in the morning.

How to Get to Sleep – Review of Sleeptracks Sleep Optimization Program

Sleeptracks Sleep Optimization Program is one of the best natural treatments for insomnia and sleeplessness that I have used. I say “natural” because it takes a more holistic approach to the problem of how to get to sleep than simply popping some pills and expecting miracles.

If you are like me and have suffered the constant stress of wondering as you go to bed whether you will be lucky enough to slip into sleep, you know of all the side effects that come with resorting to drugs. The tossing and turning makes you more worried about how to get to sleep, and the drugs regularly make you more tired the next day than the lack of sleep would have. The Sleeptracks program helps you fall asleep quickly without the use of pills and the drowsiness that goes with them. For links Click Here

Sleeptracks consists of a well thought out package of strategies and tools to fight troubled sleep and sleeplessness. It takes on the problem of how to get to sleep with a balanced approach rather than resorting to forceful methods to fight the isolated symptoms of your sleeping disorder.

This insomnia treatment consists of a collection of audio programs, each with their own specialized purpose, and a set of bonus programs. This includes a great multimedia course that shows you how to get to sleep when you hit the bed using practical behavior changes and habits that can further help you beat insomnia.

The main program consists of a three-pronged attack on your sleep problems. The ‘Insomnia Buster’ track helps to re-train your mind during the day, so that you can get to sleep quickly at night. The ‘Fall Asleep’ track actually puts you to sleep at night, and the ‘Whole Night’ track acts as an insurance against waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep. These three together form a very comprehensive way to tackle insomnia.

I have been using this program for a couple of months now and I’ve found it to be extremely effective. It might not seem to be as much of a magic cure as taking a sleeping pill, but the results you will get will speak for themselves. I now feel more relaxed and alert when I am awake than ever before, when I was depending on other “cures”. I highly recommend the Sleeptracks program to all my fellow insomniacs out there. It is a small and worthy investment towards your sanity , your health, and your quest for how to get to sleep. Wishing you many stress-free nights ahead. For more details Visit my web site.

Deadlines on Sleep

Redundant, repetitive shrieks reverberate against the walls, torturously shocking my consciousness from a dream and into a nightmare. Suffocating my ears in a pile of pillows fails to drown the sound vibrantly pulsating from across the room. My eyes are rusted shut like the doors of a two-car garage and when I finally am able to pry them open, a truck of overwhelming sensation plows through them, unloading a monstrous mass of cold, raw concrete into the frontal lobes of my brain. My vision is blurry and the siren signaling the dusk of liberty and the dawn of a new day continue as I reluctantly peel the covers from my body, exposing it to the teeth of cold air nipping at my every surface. Then suddenly, the pressure of a powerful geyser overwhelms my bladder and I sprint to the bathroom, gouging the bottoms of my bare feet on any objects in my path.

This is what waking up is like every single morning. Waking up is painful. The same suggestion I’ve heard my entire life is to get to bed earlier. Okay. Fine. I get to bed earlier. Then what? I lay there awake. I count sheep, count breaths, practice conscious relaxation exercises, and whatever. I’m still awake. Just because I’m in bed doesn’t mean I’m going to be asleep. Then I wake up and the whole thing starts over again. Sometimes I go to great lengths to force myself into being a morning person. I set my alarm incredibly early so I’m tired that night. I can keep that up for a while, but I always fall back into the exact opposite pattern. What the hell is wrong with me?

Nothing. Nothing is wrong with me. It’s the way nature intended me to be. It’s our society to blame, not me. Why is our society so discriminatory against those with biological clocks such as mine? Why are natural nocturnes persecuted like this? Whose great idea was it to have the work day begin early in the morning and end in the afternoon? Is that some kind of idea they had in 1301? 1423? Why not start in the afternoon, end in the evening, and have all night as free time? I mean, really. Why the fuck not? How many morning persons do you know and how many non-morning persons do you know? Don’t we live in a democracy? Can’t we vote on this or something?

Not getting enough sleep is one of the major causes of fatigue. That’s a direct line from a radio advertisement. Well, no shit! Duh! That’s my first reaction. Then I got to thinking that maybe people really don’t realize that. That’s why we are so incredibly faithful to this tradition of beginning the day so goddamn early. The negative outcome is that it’s not good for the body to go without enough sleep. Almost everyone does though. Then we drink caffeine to wake ourselves up and then take sleeping pills to knock ourselves out. Those things aren’t good either. If we weren’t so hell-bent on this tradition of early birds and worms and that bullshit, we wouldn’t have a need for coffee or eight-thousand brands of canned energy drinks. We wouldn’t need melatonin caplets or valerian teas or overdoses of Nyquil.

Think about it. Work could start at around one in the afternoon and end at seven. Then there’s plenty of free time until going to bed as late as four in the morning and still getting eight hours with a full hour to get ready in the morning. That sounds incredible to me. What would be the problem? Some may argue that eventually that would be too early and someone like me would start bitching about it. Well, so what? Bump it up again. What does it matter? Before we conquered and spread our culture of plastic bags and Cheeze Wiz, the Natives woke up when they were well-rested and went to sleep when they were tired. What a concept! Why can’t we do that? Well, we need some kind of plan, or things never get done, of course. That’s exactly our problem. We’re obsessed with deadlines and getting things done. Why can’t things wait? There’s always tomorrow. For instance, I didn’t graduate college in four years. So? What does it truly matter? It still happened.

We have too many deadlines: Graduate high school, graduate college, get married, have kids, work, work, work, work, work, retire, sit around thinking of the old days, and die. Why is that? That sucks! I’m obviously an advocate of education, but why do we need to get married and then have kids? Why do we have to do both? Why do we have to do either? Do we really have to live up to some kind of expectation just for the sake of an expectation? We have to work to provide others services they need and in exchange we get paid so we can make purchases. Everyone has a unique skill or talent. Everyone has some kind of ability or trade they are good at. In exchange for money or other services, we use them to please others. That’s a very functional system. It works fine. Why the deadlines though? If we truly choose to pursue careers and interests we love, do we need to be motivated by the fear of punishment for failure to meet a deadline? Can’t we trust ourselves to do it eventually? Are we really that lazy?

We are that lazy, because we’ve made ouselves that lazy. We’ve made ourselves lazy with the invention of deadlines. Being somewhere at a specific time each morning is one of these deadlines. You might like to twist this around and say I’m the lazy one for wanting to sleep, but in actuality, adequate sleep would improve performance, functionality, and even brain activity. More sleep would mean smarter, harder-working people who aren’t on drugs all day. I’m tired. Good-night.

Do Adhd Drugs Cause Heart Attacks?

Do ADHD stimulant drugs such as Ritalin cause heart attacks? Yes, they can–in a small number of children. Children who have a pre-existing heart condition. Since 1999 thirty kids have died from sudden death attributed to stimulant drugs. And more have suffered heart-related problems. Again, all of these children had a pre-existing heart condition. The drugs didn’t cause the heart condition!

I’m not crazy about giving drugs to kids for ADHD. Lots of strategies help enormously with ADHD that don’t involve Ritalin. However, I don’t want to be part of the over-reaction and scare tactics running amok on the Web. Most children will not have a cardiovascular problem with ADHD stimulant drugs.

But the American Heart Association’s (AHA) doing the right thing! They’re recommending that every child have an electrocardiogram (EKG) before a prescription for a stimulant drug is written. Some people think this is extreme and way too expensive.

Total cost could be as high as $250 million–that’s assuming 250 million kids have EKGs at the cost of about $100 per child. Hmm. Am I missing something here? A hundred bucks per kid sure doesn’t sound all that expensive to me–given that it could save a child’s life! One of my grandchildren. Your child. A child in your classroom.

Keep in mind that a child can have a heart “problem” that your pediatrician isn’t aware of. Exactly the reason the AHA’s saying “get an ECG” first before taking an ADHD drug. And, yes, there’s a strong possibility of a false positive since children’s EKG’s are hard to read. So have a second EKG, a second opinion, more cardiac screening. But don’t skip this important evaluation.

In addition to an EKG, an ADHD cardiac checklist would also include -

Patient and family history with attention to fainting, palpitations, dizziness, difficulty with exercise
Physical exam including blood pressure and a check for abnormal heartbeats.
Consultation with a pediatric cardiologist if necessary.

For me, that a drug requires an ECG first is enough to consider non-drug alternatives for managing ADHD. Let drugs be the very last resort.

Get dopamine-increasing foods on the table, establish routines and schedules and boundaries. Eliminate foods with artificial color and flavoring. Cut back on refined carbs like candy, cookies, pie, cake, chips, and white bread. Increase protein. Look into programs for ADHD like Samonas or other sound therapy, Cog Med, neurofeedback, and Retrain the Brain. Turn off the TV. Get them moving everyday with games, sports, and vigorous exercise. Make sure they’re getting enough sleep.

Try a runner’s stretch: Hands against the wall, one leg forward with knee bent, other leg stretched out behind the body. Slowly lift your heel, coming up on your toes. Deep breath. Exhale while lowering your heel to the floor. Repeat a couple of times and switch sides. It’s the same as Calf Pump in Brain Gym. Do Calf Pump two or three times a day. Notice the change. Now that your kids are eating healthier, not watching so much TV, and getting plenty of exercise and sleep, they may not need an EKG or stimulant drugs. They may not have ADHD.

And have you ever wondered if your kids really have ADHD? Now you can get the FREE “Maybe They Don’t have ADHD” inventory and checklist. Lists 43 factors that contribute to ADHD-like behavior. Copy the checklist. Use it over and over. Give it to teachers and parents. Help stop the over-diagnosis of ADHD!

Insomnia – What Is The Problem With Yor Sleep?

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder which prevents one from sleeping for extended periods of time or it can even prevent a person from being able to fall asleep altogether. Insomnia can be caused by diet, stress, drugs or alcohol and even certain feelings such as fear or dread. Sometimes, people suffer from insomnia because they simply have an overactive mind or sometimes people cannot sleep because of other physical reasons, such as excruciating pain. Whatever it is, to cure this sleeping disorder problem, it is important to understand exactly what is causing it.

Is It Something You Been Doing?

The first thing you should do if you find yourself lying in bed, unable to fall sleep is to determine whether there is something you are doing throughout the day that may be causing insomnia. For example, if you drink coffee up until nine o’clock at night, you may need to look no further as to what’s causing your sleeping disorder. Caffeine, especially at night, is a huge culprit behind this sleep preventing disorder. There are also certain foods that can keep you wide awake. If you’re not sure about your diet that may be causing your disorder, do your research or talk to a dietitian. Having that last cup of coffee could be costing you hours and hours of necessary rest and relaxation that you deserve.

If you are on some kind of medication, ask your doctor if the drug you’re taking is causing your insomnia. Some illegal drugs also cause insomnia, especially amphetamines or uppers. Alcohol, can also cause this sleeping disorder. It all comes down to monitoring exactly what is going into your body system. Very often, it’s what you’re consuming that is causing your insomnia.

Of course, if you have some challenging deadline and you’re under a lot of stress or you are dealing with some sort of extreme guilt or even if you’re really afraid of something, these, too, can cause insomnia.

However, if you are stress free (envy), besides the fact that you’re stressing that you can’t sleep, try an experiment. Try eating different foods or try eliminating certain things from your daily diet. If you suddenly find yourself sleeping like a baby, then you’ve found your culprit. The key is to listen to your body. Your body needs sleep to recharge and you need sleep so that you’re not such a bear to your co-workers in the morning. Do yourself a favor and find out what’s causing your insomnia today.
